Throwing a birthday party is always an adventurous undertaking. There are so many plans to make and supplies to purchase. Start by identifying the type of party you are throwing. Is it significant in some way? Is it for adults or children, boys or girls? Next compile the guest list. This will help you determine the number of decorations, place settings and party favors you will need. Once your guest list is in place you will need to determine if your birthday party is going to follow a theme.

Parties for significant ages tend to be decorated and catered around that particular number. Making a non-significant birthday age special can be done by introducing a theme. Typically this is something near and dear to the honoree’s heart. For children, it is often favorite film characters and standbys such as princesses, pirates and cowboys. For adults, themes tend to revolve around the guest of honor’s hobbies and passions. Football, golf, gardening and other adult pastimes make great themes.

With a theme in place you are set to start making your supply lists. Plan a menu so you will know what sort of dinnerware, flatware and table linens you will need. Disposable tablecloths are the cheapest and most efficient option. Be sure to buy one for the buffet table, the gift table, the beverage table and each dining table. You will need dinner plates if you are serving food and dessert plates for the birthday cake. Utensils should include knives, spoons and forks. It is recommended that you order double the forks, particularly if you are serving food first and cake later.

Decorations are where parties are the most fun for the planner. Balloons, streamers, centerpieces and party favors open up opportunities for a great deal of creativity. Colours and patterns can enhance the theme of your birthday party. You can even throw in some game-related décor items like piñatas and water balloons for outdoor parties.
