Party Themes

No matter what type of party you are throwing, planning it around a theme makes the party easier to plan and more successful. This idea applies to adults’ parties as well as children’s parties, birthday parties, anniversary parties, retirement parties and even holiday parties. With a theme, half the decisions are made for you.

Themes can be simple such as cowboys or princesses. They can be based around favourite movies or characters such as everyone’s favourite pirate or superhero. If the party is being given in honor of a special event such as a sixteenth birthday, golden wedding anniversary or retirement, those events themselves can serve as the theme.

Themes can go beyond the commonly used ones. They can encompass the guest of honor’s passion. For example, a football lover might ask guests to attend wearing a t-shirt of jersey with the name of their favourite team on it. Snacks could be served out of upside down football helmets. A plain green table cloth could be decorated with white streamers to resemble a football field. For a gardener, snacks can be served from flower boxes and flower pots. Guests can be given straw hats or hats with wide floppy brims as party favours.

The beauty of using a theme is it helps you plan the menu. For the football party, you could serve snacks associated with a football game such as popcorn, peanuts and hot dogs. For the gardening party, you could plan a tea with finger sandwiches. Your invitations, decorations and party favours seem to just fall in line.

Beginning with the invitations to the party, guests will know what kind of party it is, how to dress and what to expect. You can ask guests to bring gifts in keeping with your theme and provide party favours that compliment it as well. Your serving table, usually the focal point of any party, will reflect all the effort put into making sure everything is in keeping with the theme, from the table cloth to the dinner ware and flatware and the centerpiece displayed. Whatever theme chosen, guests will feel as though they have stepped into that world for a few hours.
